Here’s All You Need to Know About Your Child’s Immune System

Ami Ciccone Mar 24, 2021

You can never completely supervise what children are up to, even if you are a stay-at-home parent. Children are quick and sneaky, and they sure know how to get themselves into trouble. With the pandemic still raging wild, parents continue to worry about their child’s health.

While you can’t control what your child is doing or getting into, you can boost up their immunity, basically making their immune system strong enough that you wouldn’t have to worry about their whereabouts for the most time.

How does the immune system work?

Let’s suppose you are at an airport and are carrying a canned soda in your pocket. As you arrive at the airport, you go through several security checks to ensure the safety of all the other passengers. Once you head to the X-ray machine, your canned soda is detected and quickly confiscated.

The immune system works the same way. Once a foreign body enters into the system, it detects it and begins its operation against the foreign body. This is how the immune system fights any germs or viruses that have made their way into the body.

What can trigger the immune system?

Disease-causing germs and viruses are the ideal triggers for the immune system. However, despite the immune system trying its best to get rid of any bad substances, some germs slip away and are the reason you start to feel sick or unwell.

Viruses, on the other hand, are a different case. When they are outside the body, they are considered dead, but they start multiplying and living off your cells when they are inside the host. Viruses such as influenza, human coronaviruses, and rhinoviruses can cause common colds and lower respiratory tract infections.

What do you need to do?

The best thing you can do to protect your child is to avoid exposure in the first place simply. This can be done by practicing good physical hygiene and ensuring that your children are used to washing their hands and keeping themselves clean. When you are in public, you can supervise them and make sure they are not getting into something that could damage their health.

Should their diets be changed?

Yes, and yes, you should not only better your children’s diet but yours and your partner’s too. Your daily meals should have ample amounts of vitamins and minerals that boost the immune system and strengthen it. Many studies have shown that minerals and vitamins such as Vitamin C and Zinc are excellent for boosting the immune system.

Remember: you can’t protect your child from everything but, you can give them the strength and ability to fight off anything.
