Self-love is a good thing; we all need to develop a sense of self-love. However, this self-love should be unconditional and not because it is the demand of society because at the end of the day, we are accountable to ourselves. You do not have to be an expert to say that before you love others, you must learn to love yourself. If you fail to love yourself first, you can not love anyone else in the first place. In a nutshell, this is what sologamy is all about. Essentially, sologamy is the act of being obsessed with one’s self to the degree that you do not love anyone else, except you.
When Did Sologamy Become A Trend?
Sologamy – AKA self-love – has been around for years. Since its inception, our ancestors have sung songs of self-love and self-sufficiency. And that was for good’s sake. But recently, the trend has changed to a whole new level. Women have become so obsessed with themselves that they no longer feel the need for marriage – to others. Instead, they love themselves so much that they marry themselves.
Essentially, marriage is a social contract between two individuals. Be it between a male and a female or between the same genders. If you look at the essence of marriage, you will notice that both couples are ‘incomplete.’ Thus, they feel the need to fill this gap of incompletion. In turn, they tie the knot. Moving forward, these couples love each other and develop an unwavering sense of mutual understanding and interdependence. In the long run, they find purpose in life through this marriage. They give birth to kids, extend their families, and live a different, purposeful life.
Sologamy Is An Act Of Self-Love & Self-Marriage
But when it comes to sologamy – the self-obsessed ones – they do not feel the need for marriage. Essentially, they believe – right or wrong – that they are self-sufficient. They do not feel the incompletion that can be filled through marriage. Whether or not they are right is out of the question. What really matters is that nowadays, it is gaining wide popularity, especially among women.
However, it is essential to note that sologamy is not yet legalized in many countries worldwide. This trend is particularly gaining wide popularity in the United States and India. In these countries, self-obsessed women arrange public gatherings and tie the knot with themselves.
Does Divorce Happen In Sologamy?
Weird as it may sound, divorces also happen in these ‘solo marriages.’ In 2021, popular Brazilian actress Chris Galera publicly announced that she will be ending her solo marriage. In the statement, Galera – 33- asserted that she has fallen in love with a man and has decided to divorce herself after 90 days of solo marriage.
In other words, these women, who marry themselves, get attracted to someone else at some point. Then, they quit their self-obsession and tie the knot with others.
