Wife’s Postpartum Depression? Here’s How You Can Help

Ami Ciccone Jun 05, 2020

With rising mental health awareness, knowledge-sharing and discussions about maternal depression are being conducted on a global level. Sadly, it affects a staggering 8-15% of women in developed countries and 30% in the case of developing countries. The mental well-being of a mother is crucial to the functioning of the family. Studies have shown that a household with a depressed mom suffers from less warmth, expressiveness, and cohesiveness, coupled with conflict and rigidity.

What Causes Motherhood Depression?

Even though this condition exists, few mothers choose to seek help. Our society portrays moms as superhuman beings promoting unrealistic expectations and a lifestyle where everything is perfect, painting a picture that is far from reality. Hence, the feelings of guilt and failure arise and build up over time.

The symptoms can manifest in different ways. Moms wanting more alone time but her kids are adamant on playing, skipping essential baby chores, excessive fatigue, or frequent nervous breakdowns are some of the concerning signs.

How Can Help Be Provided?

Researchers at Bar-Ilan University, Israel, have found a way to help with the damaging mental condition. They studied a group of chronically depressed women right after their babies were born and again when their kids reached the age of six. The results affirm that a mother’s depression makes them less receptive to their child’s needs and more likely to force their own will on other family members rather than providing freedom.

But there is a solution to this condition! It was also found that when fathers shared the responsibility of engaging the little ones socially and behaved sensitively, in a non-intrusive manner, they alleviate some of the damage caused by maternal depression.

How Bad is the Scenario?

Statistics show that about 80% of women feel like they are down in the dumps after having a child, and 10% go on to develop major postpartum depression. It is a condition that should not be taken lightly as kids from a damaged household have ended up on the wrong side of history, and depression can easily tear a family apart.

As progressive thinking continues to develop, thankfully, child-care is not viewed as the responsibility of only mothers. Men are increasingly participative and are lending a hand in tasks such as household chores. If you have experienced any of the signs mentioned, or know someone who has been experiencing these issues, immediate professional help should be availed with necessary support from family members.
